crescent phase when the moon is lit but less than halfway lit
quarter moon when the moon is halfway lit
new moon when the moon is not lit
full moon when the moon is fully lit
eclipse an event during which one object in space casts a shadow onto another object
lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves through Earth's shadow
umbra the darkest part of a shadow during an eclipse
penumbra the lighter part of a shadow during an eclipse
solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth so that they sun is partially or totally obscured
antumbra lighter part of a shadow that forms at a certain distance from the object casting the shadow.
