| lunar phases | changes in the moon's appearance due to reflection of sunlight back to Earth |
| waxing (of the moon) | refers to moon getting closer to its largest size, the moon appears to grow each day |
| waning (of the moon) | refers to the moon getting closer to its smallest size, the moon appears to shrink each day |
| gibbous phase | when the moon is more than halfway lit but not fulling lit |
| crescent phase | when the moon is lit but less than halfway lit |
| quarter moon | when the moon is halfway lit |
| new moon | when the moon is not lit |
| full moon | when the moon is fully lit |
| eclipse | an event during which one object in space casts a shadow onto another object |
| lunar eclipse | occurs when the moon moves through Earth's shadow |
| umbra | the darkest part of a shadow during an eclipse |
| penumbra | the lighter part of a shadow during an eclipse |
| solar eclipse | occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth so that they sun is partially or totally obscured |
| antumbra | lighter part of a shadow that forms at a certain distance from the object casting the shadow. |
