Mitosis and Meiosis

question / terms Answer
What is mitosis and what is it used for? The splitting of cells ; for growth, repair, and development.
What is meiosis and what is it used for? Meiosis is the sexual reproduction of an organism, its used for an organism to reproduce sexually
How many phases are in the cell cycle? There are 4 total phases
What happens in G1 and G1 checkpoint? In G1, proteins and organelles are made, and the cell grows. At the checkpoint, it makes sure the cell is big and healthy enough
What are homologous ? Chromosomes that are the same in shape and size and have the same maternal and paternal chromatids
Diploid (2n) 2 sets of chromosomes
Haploid (n) A single set of chromosomes
What happens in the S phase? DNA is replicated
What happens in the G2 checkpoint? It checks for any mistakes in the DNA
What happens in the G2 phase? it prepares to divide
How many phases are in the Mitosis phase? 4 phases; prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase ( along with cytokinesis but isnt part of it)
What happens at the mitosis checkpoint? It checks to see if the chromosomes have lined up at the equator and is the spindle fibers are attached.
What are the two main reasons as to why a cell divides? Efficiency, and as the cell grows, it places increasing demands on its own DNA
What happens in prophase? The nuclear membrane breaks down, spindle fibers are formed, and the chromatin condenses into chromosomes
What happens in metaphase? The chromosomes line up in the middle and the spindle fibers attach to them
What happens in Anaphase? The chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle fibers and move on opposite ends of the cell
What happens in telophase? The chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and uncoil and two nuclear membranes are formed
Cytokinesis The cytoplasm from the original cell splits, forming the 2 daughter cells
How many chromosomes are there after Mitosis? What about Meiosis? 46 and 23
Sexual reproduction When 2 organisms sexually reproduce via a sperm and an egg to form another organism that is genetically different from the parents
Asexual reproduction When an organism asexually reproduces via somatic cells (body cells) to form an genetically identical cell
What are gametes? reproductive cells (sperm and an egg)
What are germ cells and what are they used for? Germ cells are cells that are specialized for sexual reproduction; it makes sperm and eggs
Autosomes Chromosomes w/ genes that do not determine the sex of individual
Sex chromosomes Chromosomes that DO have genes that determine the sex of an individual

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
