Anatomy 11

exam 3 material, nervous system

TermDefinition
central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system (PNS) cranial and spinal nerves that contain both sensory and motor fibers, connects CNS to muscles, glands, and sensory receptors
enteric digestive system/ GI tract
spinal nerves 31 pairs DONT NEED TO KNOW NAMES
cranial nerves 12 pairs of nerves
ganglia located outside brain and spinal column, mass that contains cell bodies of neurons (Swollen)
sensory receptors can be part of neurons or specialized cells that monitor changes
sensory going in
motor going out
somatic (voluntary) nervous system (SNS) motor neurons to skeletal muscle
autonomic (involuntary) nervous system motor neurons to smooth and cardiac muscle, and glands
sympathetic division speeds up heart rate
parasympathetic division slows down heart rate
sensory function to sense change in internal and external environment -sensory (afferent) neurons (unipolar and bipolar)
integrative function to analyze the sensory information and make decisions -association neuron or interneurons (multipolar)
motor function respond to stimuli by initiation action -motor (efferent) neuron (multipolar)
axon like a wire that sends an electrical signal, sends thing away from cell body
dendrites receiving information to send to cell body
unmyelinated means not insulated
slow axonal flow movement in 1 direction, away from cell body, 1-5mm per day
fast axonal flow transport in either direction, 200-400mm per day, microtubule highway
multipolar neuron most common, multiple processes, several dendrites and 1 axon
bipolar neuron 1 main dendrite and 1 axon
pseudo unipolar neuron 1 process only, develops from bipolar neuron, always sensory neurons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
