UNIT 5 #1

Unit # 5 Vocabulary definitions- Lessons # 1-3: QUIZ # 1

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that takes up space (volume) and has mass.
Weight the measurement of the amount of force of GRAVITY PULLING down on an object. GRAVITY CANNOT PUSH! CHANGES DUE TO LOCATION because the force of GRAVITY CHANGES.
Mass The amount of matter in an object. Mass doesn’t change no matter where you put the object.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up; Doesn’t change no matter where you put the object.
Buoyancy the characteristic of an object to float.
Density The mass of an object divided by its volume. Denser objects will sink; less dense will float.
Scale an instrument used to measure weight.
Balance, balance scale, digital balance an instrument used to measure mass.
Thermometer an instrument used to measure temperature.
Temperature the measure of the energy of motion of particles of matter
Solid a state of matter in which the particles are the closest and touching, and vibrate; has a definite volume and shape; have the least amount of energy.
Liquid a state of matter in which the particles are farther away than a solid, but not as far as a gas; slide past one another & are slippery; has a definite volume, but takes the shape of the container; more energy than solids, but less energy than gases.
Gas a state of matter in which the particles are the farthest away and bounce off one another; no definite volume & no definite shape; gases have the greatest amount of energy.
Properties A word that means the same as characteristics and features; physical or chemical properties
Change of phase /Change of state of matter- PHYSICAL CHANGE; When a substance is heated or cooled.
Physical change physical properties that change matter physically, but do not affect the type of matter.
Chemical change matter undergoes a change, that results in a substance with new & different properties.
Reaction the process in which new substances are formed during a chemical change.
Conservation of Mass/ Matter, & Energy Mass/Matter or Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but change forms. The amount of matter always stays the same through any physical & chemical change.- Newton’s Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter & Energy
Flexible an object that can bend
Sieve another name for a mesh screen/ strainer; has holes so small particles & liquids flow through & the larger particles stay behind in the sieve/strainer.
Filter an object used to separate very small particles from a mixture.
Distillation a process that separates particles too small to be seen or by an ordinary filter or strainer. Exam: a solution of salt & water.
Swelling an object/ substance expands, gets bigger, spreads out & takes up more space; because of heat; EXCEPT WATER!
Compresses/ Contracts/ Shrinks an object/substance’s particles move closer together & take up less space; To squeeze something into a smaller space.
Reactants The left side of a chemical equation; the substances that are undergoing the reaction.
Products, results, end products, end results The right side of a chemical equations; the substances that are produced at the end of the chemical reaction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
