Organisms and Environment Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Carnivore | An animal that eats other animals. |
| Community | A group of organisms that live in the same area and and interact with each other. |
| Energy | Power gained from food that organisms eat. |
| Ecosystem | All the living and nonliving things that interact with each other in an environment |
| Environment | All the living and nonliving elements that surround and affect an organism |
| Flow of energy | The amount of energy that moves through a food chain from organism to organism. |
| Food Chain | The path of food energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem |
| Food Web | Overlapping food chains with different pathways for the flow of food energy |
| Herbivore | An animal that eats only plants (producers) |
| Interacting | To work together |
| Living/Biotic | The condition of being alive, that includes growth and reproduction |
| Nonliving/Abiotic | Anything that was never alive like water, air, or sunlight |
| Omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals |
| Organism | A living thing |
| Habitat | The place where an organism lives |
| Niche | An organism's role (job) or function in an ecosystem |
| Population | All the organisms of the same kind that live together in an ecosystem |
| Predator | An animal that naturally preys on others |
| Prey | An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food |
| Producer | An organism that makes its own food (like plants) |
| Survival | Continuing to live or exist |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make their own food (chlorophyll) |
| Consumer | An organism that cannot make its own food and has to eat producers (plants) or other consumers |
| Decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead or decaying organisms |
