Waves Unit Science

QuestionAnswer
What is a wave caused by? A disturbance
What is a SOUND wave caused by? A vibration
What does sound travel fastest in? Solid
What are the different mediums? Solid, liquid, gas
What is used to measure sound waves? Oscilloscope
Does energy stop moving on a wave when undisturbed? No
What is the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma ray
What are seismic waves and how are they categorized? Seismic waves are earthquakes where the ground shakes because tectonic plates push together. They are categorized as P and S waves.
If the pitch is low, what is the wavelength? High
If the pitch is high, what is the wavelength? Low
If the sound is loud, what is the amplitude. High
If the sound is quiet, what is the amplitude. Low
Define wavelength Length from trough to trough or crest to crest
Define amplitude Height of wave
Define crest Highest point on wave
Define trough Lowest point on wave
Define rarefaction Un-squished part of longitudinal wave
Define compression Squished part of longitudinal wave
Define mechanical Needs a medium
Define electromagnetic Does not need a medium
What are the two main types of waves? Mechanical and electromagnetic
What category do transverse waves fall under? Mechanical
What category do longitudinal waves fall under? Mechanical
What category do sound waves fall under? Mechanical
What category do earthquakes fall under? Mechanical
What category do light waves fall under? Electromagnetic
What category do microwaves fall under? Electromagnetic
What category do x-ray waves fall under? Electromagnetic
What category do radio waves fall under? Electromagnetic
What are P waves? Longitudinal waves that are called "push and pull waves"...sometimes called primary waves.
What are S waves? Transverse waves that are called "side to side waves"...sometimes called secondary waves.
White objects... REFLECT all light
Black objects... ABSORB all light
What are the primary light colors? Red, blue, green
What are the secondary light colors? Yellow, cyan, magenta
What do concave lenses do? Zoom out
What do convex lenses do? Zoom in
Why might a straw in water appear to be bent? Light bends when changing from one medium to another depending on how fast it can move through each medium, so the light would be refracted.
Why are rainbows created? Light passes through a raindrop and water acts as a prism, so light is diffracted.
What is fluorescence? When an object ONLY glows under black light.
What is phosphorescence? When an object CONTINUES glowing after it is removed from the black light.
What is the equation for finding velocity? Frequency x wavelength
What is the equation for wavelength? Velocity/Frequency
What is the equation for finding frequency? Velocity/wavelength
red+green yellow
red+blue magenta
green+blue cyan
green+blue+red white
What tool turns light into rainbows? Prism
Why isn't sound in space? Air molecules are too spread out
If the pitch is high, what is the frequency? High
