| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Protostar | a young star in the early stages of formation; nuclear fusion begins; is first classified as a star |
| Main Sequence | longest part of a star's life; 90% of all stars are in this stage; 3rd stage in the life cycle of a star |
| Magnitude | the brightness of a star |
| Absolute Magnitude | how bright a star really is |
| Apparent Magnitude | how bright a star will appear to an observer on Earth |
| Luminosity | measure of a star's brightness |
| Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) Diagram | a chart that plots stars based upon their temperature and brightness; shows color, spectral class, and magnitude |
| Sun | average sized star located in the Main Sequence on the HR Diagram; the center of our Solar System |
| Nebula | a large cloud of dust and gas held together by gravity; the first stage in a star's life cycle |
| Black Hole | an object with a gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape; is at the center of the Milky Way; last step in life cycle for an extremely high mass star |
| Universe | all of space and everything in it |
| Milky Way | the galaxy in which we reside; a spiral galaxy that contains about 400 billion stars |
| Spiral Galaxy | a galaxy that is flat and disk shaped with a central bulge and "arms" that extend outward; often contains a black hole at the center |
| Elliptical Galaxy | a galaxy that is shaped like a round or flattened ball, generally containing only old stars; the most abundant type of galaxy in the universe |
| Irregular Galaxy | a galaxy that has no distinct pattern or shape, less than 5% of know galaxies are this type |
