Diversity of Living
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Evolution? | The theory that all living species are the modified descendants of earlier species |
| What is a Phylogenetic Tree? | View of evolution that shows all shared common ancestors |
| What is Diversity in Evolution? | The traits that stick with new species that evolved or those traits that died off |
| What is Taxonomy? | The science of identifying and classifying organisms |
| What is the Biospehre? | The part of Earth inhabited by living organisms |
| Linnean System of Classification | - Classified into groups based on their characteristics |
| Hierarchy of Living Beings | Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species |
| What is an Eukaryotic Cell? | - Contains membrane bound organelles - DNA is found in linear chromosomes |
| What is a Prokaryotic Cell? | - No nucleus or other membrane bound organelles - Genetic material is found in circular chromosomes |
| What are the 6 Kingdoms? | Bacteria Archaea Protista Plantae Fungi Animalia |
| What are the 3 Domains? | Bacteria Archaea Eukarya |
| Which Kingdoms reside in Domain Eukarya? | Protista Plantae Fungi Animalia |
| What is Domain Archaea? | -Prokaryotic - Considered oldest species, can live in extreme environments |
| What is Domain Bacteria? | - Prokaryotic - Thrive in same environments favored by humans |
| What is Domain Eukarya? | - Eukaryotic - Organisms that contain cells that have membrane bound organelles |
| Dichotomous Keys | Diagram that separates organisms by different characteristics (land (yes no), yes: mouse, no: fish) |
| What is Phylogeny? | The study of the evolutionary relationships between and among species |
| Identify: What is 1 on Phylogenetic Trees Slide? | Node |
| Identify: What is 2 on Phylogenetic Trees Slide? | Clade |
| What is a Virus? | A biological particle composed of nucleic acid and protein |
| What is an Intracellular Parasite? | Organisms that must use a host cell to reproduce |
| What are the Requirements of Life | Reproduce Evolve Metabolize Move/Grow Body )separate from environment) Inheritable Information (Genes) |
| Are Viruses alive? | No, they complete most of the Requirements of Life, however they do not have cellular structures, have no cells/organelles, doesn't metabolize, etc |
| Lysogenic vs Lytic Cycle | Lysogenic: involves the incorporation of the viral genome into the host cell genome, infecting it from within. (latent period) Lytic: reproduction of viruses using a host cell to manufacture more viruses; the viruses then burst out of the cell |
| What is Biotech and how is it utilised? | Viral detectors and gene therapy: insert a desired gene to host cell using virus to alter genetic code in order to help them prevent or treat a disease |
| How are Vaccines made? | Made of weakened or killed firms of the microbe (bad guy). Builds up immunity by stimulating the body to a weaker version of the microbe so body can then defend itself better (think COVID and variants) |
| What is Endosymbiosis? | A symbiotic relationship where one organism livesinside another |
