| Evolution | the process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise |
| Charles Darwin | English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. He developed a theory of natural selection that led to the development of the modern day Theory of Evolution. |
| Artificial Selection | the human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits |
| Natural Selection | the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals |
| Variation | the occurrence of hereditary or nonhereditary differences between different individuals of a population |
| Mutation | a change in the structure or amount of the genetic material in an organism; it can have a positive effect, negative effect or no effect |
| Adaptation | a characteristic that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment |
| Extinction | the death of every member of a species |
| Fossil | the trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock |
| Fossil Record | the history of life in the geologic past as indicated by the traces or remains of living things; all fossils that have been discovered |
| Transitional Fossils | any fossilized remains of a life form that exhibits traits common to both an ancestral group and its derived descendant group |
| Common Ancestry | the most recent species from which two species have evolved; an ancestor that two organisms have in common |
