| Element Cycling | The breakdown of organic matter into it constituent elements for re-use in the ecosystem |
| Chemical Elements | A substance that cannot be decomposed or transformed into chemical substances by ordinary chemical processes |
| Molecule | Particles containing more than one atom |
| Compound | A substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined |
| Biomolecules | An organic molecule that includes carbohydrates, protein, lipids, and nucleic acids |
| Reservoirs | An artificial lake where water is stored |
| Biosphere | The parts of the earth where life exists |
| Hydrosphere | The total amount of water on a planet |
| Atmosphere | An atmosphere is made of the layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body |
| Law of Conservation Matter | Law of conservation of matter states that the total mass should be a constant inside a closed system that does not allow matter or energy to escape |
| Geological Carbon Cycle | The carbon cycle is nature's way of reusing carbon atoms |
| Biological Carbon Cycle | The biological carbon cycle is the rapid exchange of carbon among living things |
| Mycorrhizae | a fungus which grows in association with the roots of a plant |
| Mycelia | a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae |
| Nitrogen Fixation | any natural or industrial process that causes free nitrogen |
| Nitrification | a microbial process by which reduced nitrogen compounds (primarily ammonia) are sequentially oxidized to nitrite and nitrate |
| Anaerobic | relating to, involving, or requiring an absence of free oxygen. |
| Denitrification | Denitrification is the process by which nitrates. are reduced to gaseous nitrogen by facultative. anaerobes. |
| Water Cycle | The water cycle shows the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere |
| Evaporation | the process of turning from liquid into vapor. |
| Transpiration | the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata. |
| Condensation | the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid. |
| Precipitation | Precipitation is any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth |
| Aquifers | An aquifer is a body of rock and/or sediment that holds groundwater |
| Runoff | the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc |
| Eutrophication | Eutrophication is a natural process that results from accumulation of nutrients in lakes or other bodies of water |
| Greenhouse Gases | gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat |
