Element Cycling The breakdown of organic matter into it constituent elements for re-use in the ecosystem
Chemical Elements A substance that cannot be decomposed or transformed into chemical substances by ordinary chemical processes
Molecule Particles containing more than one atom
Compound A substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined
Biomolecules An organic molecule that includes carbohydrates, protein, lipids, and nucleic acids
Reservoirs An artificial lake where water is stored
Biosphere The parts of the earth where life exists
Hydrosphere The total amount of water on a planet
Atmosphere An atmosphere is made of the layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body
Law of Conservation Matter Law of conservation of matter states that the total mass should be a constant inside a closed system that does not allow matter or energy to escape
Geological Carbon Cycle The carbon cycle is nature's way of reusing carbon atoms
Biological Carbon Cycle The biological carbon cycle is the rapid exchange of carbon among living things
Mycorrhizae a fungus which grows in association with the roots of a plant
Mycelia a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae
Nitrogen Fixation any natural or industrial process that causes free nitrogen
Nitrification a microbial process by which reduced nitrogen compounds (primarily ammonia) are sequentially oxidized to nitrite and nitrate
Anaerobic relating to, involving, or requiring an absence of free oxygen.
Denitrification Denitrification is the process by which nitrates. are reduced to gaseous nitrogen by facultative. anaerobes.
Water Cycle The water cycle shows the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere
Evaporation the process of turning from liquid into vapor.
Transpiration the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata.
Condensation the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid.
Precipitation Precipitation is any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth
Aquifers An aquifer is a body of rock and/or sediment that holds groundwater
Runoff the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc
Eutrophication Eutrophication is a natural process that results from accumulation of nutrients in lakes or other bodies of water
Greenhouse Gases gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat
