Science Vocab #3

Cell Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Cell the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body
Osmosis osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell's partially permeable membrane.
Cell Theory states that all biological organisms are composed of cells; cells are the unit of life and all life come from preexisting life
Cell Wall a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria
Cell Membrane found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside
Nucleus the structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes
Organelle any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell
Ribosome an intercellular structure made of both RNA and protein
Nucleic Acid the main information-carrying molecules of the cell
Selectively Permeable its ability to differentiate between different types of molecules, only allowing some molecules through while blocking others
Cytoplasm The fluid inside a cell but outside the cell's nucleus
Mitochondria membrane-bound organelle found in the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum a network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
Golgi Apparatus responsible for transporting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids into vesicles for delivery to targeted destinations
Chloroplast plant cell organelles that convert light energy into relatively stable chemical energy via the photosynthetic process
Lysosome an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
DNA The molecule inside cells that contains the genetic information responsible for the development and function of an organism
Passive Transport a type of cellular transport in which substances such as ions and molecules move down their respective concentration
Active Transport a kind of cellular transport where substances move against a concentration gradient
Diffusion process resulting from random motion of molecules by which there is a net flow of matter from a region of high concentration to a region
Tissue A group or layer of cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organ A part of the body that performs a specific function
Organ System a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions
Endocytosis a process by which cells absorb external material by engulfing it with the cell membrane
Exocytosis a form of bulk transport during which large numbers of molecules are transported out of the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
