Pulse & Respiration

| Temporal pulse | on either side of the forehead |
| Carotid pulse | at the neck on either side of the trachea |
| Brachial pulse | inner aspect of forearm at the antecubital space (crease of the elbow) |
| Radial pulse | the inner aspect of the wrist, above the thumb |
| Femoral pulse | the inner aspect of the upper thigh where the thigh joins with the trunk of the body |
| Popliteal pulse | behind the knee |
| Dorsalis Pedis (pedal pulse) | at the top of the foot arch |
| Apical pulse | over the apex of the heart using stethoscope |
| Normal Pulse Rate for an Adult | 60 - 100 beats/minute |
| Bradycardia | < 60 beats/minute |
| Tachycardia | > 100 beats/minute |
| Arrhythmia | irregular or abnormal heart rhythm |
| Normal Respiratory Rate for an Adult | 12 - 20 breaths/minute |
| Bradypnea | < 10 breaths/minute |
| Tachypnea | > 25 breaths/minute |
| Dyspnea | difficult or labored breathing |
| Apnea | absence of breathing |
| Cyanosis | bluish discoloration of the skin due to lack of O2 |
| Orthopnea | severe dyspnea in which breathing is very difficult in any position other than sitting erect or standing. |
| Cheyne-Stokes respirations | abnormal breathing pattern characterized by period of dyspnea followed by periods of apnea. |
| Rales | bubbling or noisy sounds caused by fluid or mucus in the air passages. |
| Wheeze | difficulty breathing with high-pitched whistling or sighing sounds during inspiration and/or expiration. |
