| magnitude | measure of the energy released during an earthquake |
| seismograph | a device that measures the strength of an earthquake |
| epicenter | the point on Earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake |
| p waves | primary waves, travel through the body of Earth. Travels in a straight line, second strongest wave |
| s waves | seismic waves that travel through the body of the earth. These are the slower than p waves, stronger and cause more damage |
| earthquake | the shaking and trembling that happens when rock under the Earth's surface moves |
| surface waves | seismic waves that travel on the Earth's surface; these are the most destructive |
| body waves | earthquake waves that occur inside the Earth; p waves and s waves |
