Solar Interior region of the Sun below the photosphere
Eclipse when one body passes in front of another, so light from the occulted body is blocked
Spicule small solar storm that expels jets of hot matter into the Sun's lower atmosphere
Umbra central, darkest, and coolest region of a sunspot
Penumbra outer region of a sunspot, which is not as dark and not as cool as the center
Magnetic Field Lines represent the direction of a magnetic force and field
Polarity measure of the direction of the solar magnetic field in sunspots, north and south
Prominence loop or sheet of glowing gas ejected from an active region on the solar surface
Active Region area of the Sun's photosphere surrounding a sunspot group, which can erupt violently
Sunspot Cycle regular pattern where the sunspot average reaches its maximum about every 11 years
Solar Maximum point of the sunspot cycle during which many spots are seen
Solar Minimum point of the sunspot cycle during which only a few spots are seen
Maunder Minimum lengthy period of solar inactivity that extended from about 1645 to 1715 (a.k.a. the Little Ice Age)
Solar Cycle 22-year period needed for both the sunspot average and the Sun's polarity to repeat
Ionization when an atom or molecule loses all of its electrons
Solar Flare explosive event occurring in or near an active region on the Sun
Coronal Mass Ejection giant magnetic "bubble" of ionized gas that separates from the solar atmosphere
Coronal Hole vast region of the Sun's atmosphere where gas streams freely into space at high speeds
