Energy Flow

Flow and Limiting Factors

QuestionAnswer
What is a biotic factor? all the LIVING organisms in an ecosystem
What is an abiotic factor? all the NON-living parts of an ecosystem
What is the law of conservation of energy? Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it may change forms.
How does energy enter an ecosystem? Through the sun, by photosynthesis
What are producers? Autotrophs use sunlight to produce their own food (sugars).
What are consumers? Heterotrophs obtain energy by consuming the organic matter of other organisms.
What are decomposers? Detritivores eat dead matter and return nutrients to the soil, air, and water.
What is symbiosis? Living things live together in relationships
What are the three types of symbiotic relationships? Parasitism Mutualism Commensalism
What is parasitism? One organism benefits from the association & the other is harmed.
What is mutualism? A relationship where both species benefit.
What is commensalism? When one species benefits and the other species is neither harmed nor helped.
What is a food chain? Shows how energy flows through an ecosystem in a single pathway.
What is a food web? Represents the many interconnected food chains and energy pathways in an ecosystem.
What are the different trophic levels? producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and tertiary consumers
What is a trophic level? Each step in a food chain or food web
How much energy is lost when going to the next trophic level? 90%
How much energy is passed on to the next trophic level? 10%
How is energy lost? As heat to the universe
What is a population? group of a single species living in a given area that interact with each other
What is a community? multiple different species living in a given area that interact with each other
What is a limiting factor? a factor or resource found in an environment that will limit the amount of growth of the populations of animals
What are the three main limiting factors? Amount of food, amount of water, and amount of space
What is carrying capacity? The carrying capacity of an ecosystem is the maximum amount of organisms that can exist given the provided resources
What is Exponential growth? Looks like a “J” Type of growth that occurs if there were unlimited resources
What is logistical growth? Looks like an “S” Type of growth that occurs if there were limited resources
How do you read carrying capacity on a graph? Look at the value on the y axis when the line flattens out

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
