-per- per-udic moisture, year round humid
-gyps- presence of gypsum horizon; mainly arid and semi arid
-hist- presence of histic epipedon, not histosol
soil series most basic unit of soil taxonomy; represents a set profile/ order of horizons; very specific; 25,000 in US, >1,500 in CA
soil family identify subsets of subgroups based on texture, mineral composition, CEC, and temperature; the first four sections of a soil name; apprx. 8000
soil order broadest category, focus on presence/absence of diagnostic horizons ; reflect major course of development; 12
