Unit 8 Space

TermDefinition
Solar System The Sun and the planets and other objects that orbit the Sun.
Planet A large body in space that orbits a star and does not produce light on its own.
Orbit A path of an object as it circles around another object in outer space.
Gravity A natural force that pulls two objects toward one another.
Moon A natural object that revolves around a planet.
Asteroid A rocky object that orbits the Sun, found mostly in the region between Mars and Jupiter.
Comet A small object in space that orbits a star and is made of ice, dust particles, and frozen gases.
Sun Our Solar System's star that is made of hydrogen and helium gases, and supplies the heat and light that sustains life on Earth -a yellow dwarf star (considered an average sized star) -Earth is 93 million miles from the Sun
Meteor A piece of rock or metal from space that enters Earth's atmosphere.
Revolve The movement of an object around another object. The earth revolves around the sun.
Rotation When an object SPINS on its axis.
Meteorite When a meteor lands on the Earth's surface
Star A huge ball of gases that makes its own heat and light -billions and billions of stars are in the universe -different sizes and colors -our Sun is a star
Asteroid Belt A disc in the solar system, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, where millions of different sized asteroids orbit the Sun.
The moon Not a planet but orbits the Earth, 238,900 miles from Earth.
Milky Way Galaxy -the galaxy where our solar system is located (we are one of billions!) -estimated to have up to 400 billion stars! -estimated to have up to 100 billion planets!
Venus -the 2nd planet from the sun -closest planet to EARTH -the hottest planet
Earth -3rd planet from the sun -our home -only known planet to support life in our solar system
Mars -4th planet from the sun -called the Red Planet -second smallest planet -has largest mountain in the solar system
Jupiter -5th planet from the sun -largest planet in our solar system -gas giant -known for it's Great Red Spot -79 moons
Saturn -6th planet from the sun -second largest planet -gas giant -known for it's rings
Uranus -7th planet from the sun -third largest -considered an "ice giant" -light blue in color -rotates on it's side
Neptune -8th planet from the sun -farthest planet from the sun -dark blue -"ice giant" -coldest planet -fastest recorded winds in the solar system (1,300mph!)
Mercury -1st and closest planet to the sun -the fastest planet -the smallest planet
Pluto -once was the 9th planet in our Solar System but is now considered a dwarf planet. It is the largest dwarf planet in our Solar System.
