Conservation of Water, Air, and Soil

conservation the careful protection and saving of natural resources
glacier A slowly moving body of ice on land
aquifer An underground water supply
reservoir A body of water used to collect and store freshwater
hydrosphere The system where all of Earth’s water is located
distribute To spread out
wetland An ecosystem that helps remove pollutants from water
prototype An original and simple model that let's you test out an idea.
ozone A pale blue gas that is made of 3 molecules of oxygen; it is poisonous and explosive
smog A mixture of smoke and fog that forms over cities.
ozone layer A form of oxygen that protects living thing on Earth from the sun's harmful rays.

water filter a device for removing unwanted substances such as bacteria or harmful chemicals from drinking water
fossil fuels a form of non-renewable energy sources such as coal, coal products. These fuels come from plants and animals that existed millions of years ago
soil A mixture of bits of rock and once-living plants and animals
humus dead plant and animal matter that has broken down
forest soil thin layer of topsoil ; it has little humus; Heavy rains carries minerals deep into the ground. Plant needs long roots to reach minerals in soil.
prairie or grasslands soil rich in humus; corn, wheat, and rye grow well in this soil
desert soil sandy; rich in minerals; it doesn't have much humus; crops can grow well if water is piped in
weathering breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces
erosion the movement of weathered rock
deposition the process by which weathered, eroded materials is taken from one location to a new location and dropped (deposited).
sediments bits of soil or rock that may be eroded and deposited.
terracing cutting lat shelves into a hillside. It looks like stairs or bleachers in a stadium.
wind break Planting a row of trees around crops in order to block the wind
strip farming Planting strips of grass between crops to hold down soil.
contour plowing Plowing rows across a hill instead of up and down
crop rotation Planting different crops on the same land in different years
fertilization Adding nutrients back to the soil
pollution adding harmful materials to soil, air, and water
