| sonar | a system that uses sound waves to measure distance and locate objects in the ocean |
| downwelling | deep current that moves water from the surface to greater depths; brings down oxygen |
| tidal range | the difference in height between a high tide and the next low tide |
| continental shelf | the flat or gently sloping land that lies submerged around the edges of a continent and that extends from the shoreline out to a continental slope |
| density | a measure of the amount of matter packed into a given volume |
| neap tide | when the sun's gravity and the moon's gravity pull at earth from a different direction; smaller tidal bulge and tidal dip |
| El Nino | global weather event caused by changes in wind and water movements |
| ocean current | a mass of moving water |
| spring tide | when the gravity of the sun and moon combine to pull Earth’s water in the same direction; extra-high tidal bulge and an extra-low tidal dip |
| longshore current | mass of water moving parallel to the shore |
| salinity | a measure of the amount of dissolved salt contained in water |
| upwelling | deep current that moves water up to the surface; brings up nutrients |
| rip current | narrow streams of water that break through sandbars and drain rapidly back to sea |
| tide | the periodic rising and falling of the water level of the ocean |
