Nervous System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are our sense organs? | Ears, eyes, nose, tongue, skin |
| What do sense organs respond to? | External stimuli |
| Where do sense organs send messages? | The brain |
| What does the brain do with messages from sense organs? | The brain interprets the messages and decides how to respond. |
| What is the main function (job) of the nervous system? | To send and receive messages that control your body’s activities |
| What are the three main components (parts) of the nervous system? | brain, spinal cord, nerves |
| What are nerve cells called? | Neurons |
| What are nerves covered in? How does this help nerves? | Nerves are covered in myelin. This helps the messages get communicated more quickly through the neural networks. |
| What is a neural network? | All the connected neurons put together. This is also just commonly called "our nerves". |
| What is the function of the spinal cord? | 1. It connects lots of branches of nerves (neural networks) 2. It helps the body respond with quick reflexes in an emergency |
| What is the function of the brain? | It is the control center of the body |
| How do the ears receive messages and send messages to the brain? | Sounds vibrations enter the ear and are converted into electrical messages sent through the nerves |
| How does the skin receive messages and send messages to the brain? | The skin feels pain, pressure, temperature changes and more. It sends electrical messages through the nerves to the brain. |
| How does the tongue receive messages and send messages to the brain? | Taste buds within the papillae (bumps on the tongue) receive a taste, and send electrical messages through the nerves to the brain |
| How does the nose receive messages and send messages to the brain? | The nerve endings in the nose detect scents, and then it sends electrical messages through the nerves to the brain |
| How does the eye receive messages and send messages to the brain? | The eye receives messages through the lens and onto the retina. The retina sends electrical messages through the optic nerve to the brain. |
| What is the myelin sheath? | The coating around the nerves that helps messages travel faster. |
| What is a synapse? | The place where two nerve cells (neurons) connect. |
