Mechanical Advantage

QuestionAnswer
What are Contact Forces? A Contact Force is a force between two objects that can only exist if these objects make direct contact with each other.
What is the most common type of Contact Force? The most common type of Contact Force is frictional force.
What are Non-Contact Forces? Non-Contact forces can push or pull an object without touching it.
Name a few examples of Non-Contact Forces; gravity, static electricity, and magnetism
What is A Force? A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object. Forces can be classified as either contact forces or action-at-a-distance forces. Force can cause an object to either start or stop moving.
What is the formula for Force? Force(F)=Mass (M) x Gravity (G)
What is Mass? Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
What is the formula for Mass? Mass(M)= Force (F) x Gravity(G)
What are the differences between Weight and Mass? Mass is not the same of Weight, because weight can change if the gravitational force differs, but Mass otherwise does not change even if the force is different.
What is the definition of Work? Work is the amount of force applied into an object when theres is an output.
What is the formula for Work? Work(W)= Force(F) x Distance(D)
What is the formula for Gravity? Gravity(G)= Force(F) x Mass(M)
What is the Definition of Distance? Distance is the total movement of an object without any regard to direction.
What is A Mechanical System? A mechanical system is a group of physical parts that interact with each other. The parts function as a whole in order to complete a task. Mechanical systems convert an input motion and force into a desired output motion and force.
What are the three elements of Mechanical Systems? Input, Process, and Output
What is A Lever? A lever is a simple machine used to increase force being applied to an object. Levers are considered a simple machine because they consist of only 2 parts.
What are the two different parts of a Lever? The fulcrum and the Handle.
What is a Fulcrum? The fulcrum is the point of a lever which the turns/Balances the object.
What are the three different parts of a lever; First Class Levers (when the fulcrum is in the of the effort and the load) Second Class Levers (the load is in the middle between the fulcrum and the effort) Third Class Levers (the effort is in the middle between the fulcrum and the load).
What are Input and Output Forces. The input force is the force applied to the lever and the output force refers to the force applied to the lever to move the load.
What are Simple Machines? Simple Machines consist of few or no moving parts that are used to change motion and the magnitude of a force in order to increase the mechanical advantage.
What are common examples of Simple Machines; Some examples of this would be wheel, axle, pulley, screw, and Levers.
What is Ideal Mechanical System? The ideal mechanical advantage is the least possible amount of force input for the most amount of work done.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
