Chapter 45 - Sensory

What are the two components of the sensory experience? Reception and Perception
This is the process of receiving data about the external and internal environment through the senses. Sensory Reception
What are the senses by which people maintain contact with the external environment? Vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch
What are the terms used to describe the senses? Visual (sight), Auditory (hearing), Olfactory (smell), Gustatory (taste), and Tactile (touch)
The sense that perceives the solidity of objects and their size, shape, and texture. Stereognosis
Refers to the awareness of positioning of body parts and movements. Kinesthesia
The ability to determine body positioning with eyes closed. Proprioception
For a person to receive the necessary data to experience the world, these four conditions must be met. Stimulus, receptor, impulse, and translation
This system extends from the hypothalamus to the medulla and mediates arousal. Reticular Activating System (RAS)
This occurs when a person experiences decreased sensory input or input that is monotonous , unpatterned, or meaningless. Sensory Deprivation
Occurs when a person experiences so much sensory stimuli that the brain is unable to either respond meaningfully or ignore the stimuli. Sensory Overload
Impaired or absent functioning in one or more senses. Sensory Deficit
Difficulty in the way the brain takes in, organizes, and uses sensory information, causing a person to have problems interacting effectively in theh everyday environment. Sensory Processing Disorder
According to Diane Ackerman , high-tech devices and electronics are causing individuals to suffer from this as they lose the ability to "be sensually present in the moment and enjoy the world around us." Sensory Poverty
Cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, hypertensive retinopathy, presbycusis, hearing loss, taste and smell changes, as well as, peripheral neuropathy, are just a short list of potential changes related to what? Sensory Changes Related to Aging
