Nervous System

TermDefinition
NEURON The cells in our body that carries the electrical signals throughout our bodies
BRAIN The body's main information center, where information is received and processed “command center”
SPINAL CORD Long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue. The pathway for messages sent by the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS) The brain is the center of our thoughts, the interpreter of our external environment, and the origin of control over body movement. The skull protects the brain while the vertebrae protects the spinal cord
PERIFERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (PNS) contains all the nerves that lie outside of the central nervous system (CNS). Carries sensory information about the external world to organs, limbs, and skin to the CNS.
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM involuntary is part of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary processes
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM voluntary nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system associated with the voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles
REFLEX an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus
