Asexual Reproduciton Reproduction with only one parent which produces genetically identical offspring
Sexual Reproduciton Reproduction with two parents which produces offspring that are genetically different
Fertilization When egg and sperm cells come together to form new cells
Trait A physical characteristic passed from parent to offspring
Gene A sequence of DNA
Inheritance The process by which an offspring receives genes from its parent
Allele Different forms of the same gene (Aa)
Heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring
Dominant Allele When one form of a gene dominates or takes over. Designated by an uppercase letter
Recessive Allele When one form of a gene recedes or is masked by another form. Designated by a lowercase letter.
Probability How likely it is that an event will occur
Genotype The genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype The physical expression of traits
Chromosome A structure which contains DNA
Cell Cycle The life of a cell or the process in which a cell grows and divides
Pedigree A tool used to map how traits will be passed on
Meiosis The process that forms sperm and egg cells. Chromosomes are reduced by half.
Chromatids Half of a chromosome
Mitosis Cell division that makes two identical cells
