Cell structures
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cytoplasm | inside the cell, composed of gel-like substance |
| Golgi apparatus | Processes and packages protein molecules, for export from the cell. Membranous organelle that consists of tiny sacs of cisternae |
| Lysosomes | Membranous organelle, pinch inward and separate into a vesicle. Help cells break down proteins- self eating = autophagy |
| Proteasomes | Protein destroying organelle, breaks down abnormal and misfolded proteins that are no longer needed. |
| Peroxisomes | Detoxify harmful substances that may enter the cell. Most often seen in the kidney and liver. |
| Mitochondria | "Power plant" of cell, has 2 membranes |
| Nucleus | Largest cell structure that contains DNA molecules. |
| Cytoskeleton | Function as cell movement, forms extensions- microvilli, cilia, flagella |
| Plasma membrane | Phospholipid bilayer which has cholesterol and proteins, serves as a boundary of cell |
| Microvilli | Short fingerlike projections, increases cells surface area, common in the intestines. |
