Cell structures

TermDefinition
Cytoplasm inside the cell, composed of gel-like substance
Golgi apparatus Processes and packages protein molecules, for export from the cell. Membranous organelle that consists of tiny sacs of cisternae
Lysosomes Membranous organelle, pinch inward and separate into a vesicle. Help cells break down proteins- self eating = autophagy
Proteasomes Protein destroying organelle, breaks down abnormal and misfolded proteins that are no longer needed.
Peroxisomes Detoxify harmful substances that may enter the cell. Most often seen in the kidney and liver.
Mitochondria "Power plant" of cell, has 2 membranes
Nucleus Largest cell structure that contains DNA molecules.
Cytoskeleton Function as cell movement, forms extensions- microvilli, cilia, flagella
Plasma membrane Phospholipid bilayer which has cholesterol and proteins, serves as a boundary of cell
Microvilli Short fingerlike projections, increases cells surface area, common in the intestines.
