Classification

TermDefinition
Organism - an individual living thing that carries on the activities of life by means of organs which have separate functions but are dependent on each other
Cell - the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body
Unicellular nomenclature - an organism that consists of a single cell
Multicellular - an organism composed of many cells, which are to varying degrees integrated and independent.
Metabolism - the chemical changes that take place in a cell or an organism.
Stimulus - anything that can trigger a physical or behavioral change.
Response - an action or movement due to the application of a stimulus
Development - a biological science that is primarily concerned with how a living thing grows and attains maturity
Asexual reproduction - generates offspring that are genetically identical to a single parent
Sexual reproduction diagram - a mode of reproduction involving the fusion of haploid female gamete (egg cell) and haploid male gamete (sperm cell)
Spontaneous generation characteristics - the hypothetical process by which living organisms develop from nonliving matter
Autotroph evolution - an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals
Heterotroph - an organism that eats other plants or animals for energy and nutrients
Classification - the action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics
Taxonomy - the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematic
Binomial nomenclature - the system of nomenclature in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism, the first one indicating the genus and the second the specific epithet
Genus - a class, kind, or group marked by common characteristics or by one common characteristic
Species - a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another in nature and produce fertile offspring
Prokaryote - organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other organelles
Eukaryote - organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
Nucleus - the central and most important part of an object, movement, or group, forming the basis for its activity and growth
Evolution - the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection
Branching tree program - A branching identification key where the structure of the decision tree is displayed graphically as a branching structure, involving lines between items
Shared derived characteristics - one that two lineages have in common
Convergent evolution - the process whereby distantly related organisms independently evolve similar traits to adapt to similar necessities
