Scientific Investigation Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Scientific Investigation a process of finding the answer to a question using various research methods
Research study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
Observation process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information.
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Hypothesis a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Experiment a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact.
Independent Variable a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure
Dependent Variable something that depends on other factors
Controlled Variable any variable that's held constant in a research study
Control one in which the subject or a group would not be tested for the dependent variable
Data the study of data to extract meaningful insights for business.
Conclusion a statement based on experimental measurements and observations
Analyze examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something, especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
Inference the process of drawing conclusions based on evidence and reasoning
Data trends a pattern found in time series datasets
