TermDefinition
Exosphere The farthest layer of atmosphere from Earth’s surface.
Thermosphere The layer of atmosphere right below the top layer whose prefix means temperature.
Mesosphere The layer of atmosphere that is in the middle.
Continental An air mass that forms over land.
Maritime An air mass that forms over water.
Altitude As you go higher into the atmosphere it is thinner.
Stationary Front A front that stays in the same place for a few days.
El Nino current that occurs in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator; the ocean currents change/shift their usual patterns
Global Warming An increase in the world’s average temperature because of the use of fossil fuels
Greenhouse Effect An increase in CO2 that leads to Global.
Prevailing Winds A mid-latitude global wind that blows mostly in one direction.
Hydrosphere All the waters of Earth surface.
Aquifer The layer of rock and soil that groundwater flows through.
Water table The top level of groundwater in an aquifer. We get our water supply from groundwater.
Buoyant When a substance floats on top of another substance (oil on top of water.
Sublimation Ice (a solid) changing directly into water vapor (a gas) is the process (ex. dry ice).
Clouds Water vapor or ice crystals that join together and condense (condensation)
Salinity The measure of how salty water is.
Sleet Frozen drops of rain.
Reservoir An artificial lake that forms behind a dam.
Precipitation Any form of water that falls from the clouds.
Dew Liquid water on the grass formed from condensation
Run-off Any form of water that moves downhill.
Deposition At the end of the water cycle, water goes back (deposits) into the bodies of water.
Pollutants Harmful substances in the environment (air, water)
Fog A cloud at ground level.
