Energy Review Page

QuestionAnswer
What is Energy? The ability to do work.
What is work? Work is done when energy makes things move, go, or happen.
How are energy and work related? Energy is needed to do work, work is done when you have energy.
What are Joules? Unit of energy.
Why is energy NOT considered matter? Energy doesn't take up space, and doesn't have mass.
What is Kinetic Energy? Energy of movement.
Give 2 examples of KE. Ball falling, moving your arm.
As KE increases, THIS also increases. Speed.
What is Potential Energy? Stored energy.
Give 2 examples of PE. Ball being held by a string, holding on to something barely.
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Only the form can change.
What is an Energy Transformation? When energy changes form.
Give an example of an energy being transformed. Toaster - Electrical to Thermal Energy
How is PE transformed into KE? When the object gains velocity.
Explain the roles of kinetic and PE when you throw a water balloon. When you pull your arm back you create PE, but when you throw the object you make KE.
How can an objects' KE be changed? (Think about a roller coaster) Going up gives you potential, going down gives you kinetic energy.
What happens to an objects potential energy as its KE increases. The PE decreases.
What is Thermal Energy? Is it kinetic or PE? Heat, it is KE.
Give some examples of thermal energy. Hot chocolate, heat from the sun.
As atoms move faster and faster, what happens to their thermal energy? The thermal energy increases.
What is Electrical Energy? Is it kinetic or PE? Electrical Energy is electricity, and is both PE, and KE.
Give some examples of electrical energy. Lightning, batteries.
How is electrical energy useful to people? It powers all electricity.
What is Nuclear Energy? Is it kinetic or PE? Nuclear Energy is radiation, it is a form of PE.
Give an example of where you might find nuclear energy. A nuclear bomb.
What is Chemical Energy? Is it kinetic or PE? Chemical Energy is
Give some examples of chemical energy. Food, batteries
What is Radiant (Electromagnetic) Energy? Energy that travels in waves.
Give 2 examples of electromagnetic energy. Microwaves, and light
How is electromagnetic energy useful to people? Electromagnetic energy is useful to people because when you use X-rays, they are used to see a persons bones.
What is Sound Energy? Sound energy is what you hear.
What kind of energy are microwaves? Electromagnetic Energy.
What kind of energy are X-rays? Electromagnetic Energy.
How are X-rays useful to people? When someone breaks a bone they use X-rays.
What is Temperature? The average kinetic energy of moving molecules.
What is Heat? The total kinetic energy of moving molecules.
Which has more heat: A cup of hot coffee or the earth's oceans? Why? The earths oceans because
What is Conduction, Convection, and Radiation? Conduction: Heat transfer by direct contact. Convection: Heat transfer by rising. Radiation: Heat transfer by electromagnetic waves.
What is light? Light is the form of radiant energy that stimulates the organs of sight.
What is ROY G BIV? The colors of the visible spectrum in order: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo, violet.
Can Woodchucks chuck wood? No

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
