| Humans use language for | a tool to get their needs met, for learning, for thinking for problem solving, and for sharing ideas and feelings |
| Expressive language | speaking and writing |
| Receptive language | listening and reading |
| 6 interrelated components of language | phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics |
| Phonology | sounds used to express language |
| Prosodic features | speaking with expression |
| articulatory units | elements of speech such as individual sounds, syllables, and words |
| intonation | vocal pitch |
| stress | speech intensity |
| Juncture | slight pauses between parts of spoken words, note. difference between "I scream" and "ice cream" |
| Orthography | spelling patterns used in English, linking letters (graphemes) to sounds (phonemes) in spoken language. |
| morphology | breaking words apart in order to study the structures that create meaning. |
| derivational morpheme | adding a letter to or changing letters within a word thereby changing the part of speech |
| schema theory | idea that new knowledge is connected to what the learner already knows |
| pragmatics | knowing how language works and is used in one's culture |
| Professional parents | spend 40+ minutes a day interacting with their young children respond to their children 250 times per hour approved and encouraged their children 40 times per hour |
| welfare parents | spend 15 minutes each day respond 50 times per hour encourage their children 4 times per hour |
