Moisture & Temp

TermDefinition
Absolute Humidity The TOTAL amount of moisture in the air, measured in grams of water vapor per kilogram of air
Relative Humidity The percent of moisture in the air compared with how much moisture it can hold
Wet Bulb The temperature of the air compared to how much moisture there is
Dry Bulb The regular temperature you see all the time
Saturated The air is holding as much moisture as it can
Dew Point The temperature at which water vapor in the air will condense onto surfaces
Radiation Cooling Earth’s Surface absorbs light from the sun throughout the day, heating the Earth and the atmosphere. At night, that heat is radiated from the Earth, which means the Earth loses heat and gets colder.
Contact Cooling When air comes into contact with cooler surfaces, it cools
Adiabatic Cooling As air rises, it expands. As air expands, air pressure decreases and air temperature also decreases.
Orographic Lifting mountains force air upwards, cooling it
Frontal Wedging where one air masses pushes another up
Convection-Convergence warm air rises as it expands
