Amniocentesis Process in which a needle is inserted into the amniotic sac of a pregnant woman so that amniotic fluid can be removed and inspected for mutations
Asexual Reproduction Process of development by which a new organism develops from a single parent
Cervix outer end/ border of the uterus
Chorionic Villus Sampling Process in which the chorion (part of the placenta) is removed and examined under a microscope
Clone a copy of an organism that has the exact same genetic code
Differentiation Process of development by which a new organism develops from a combination of the genetics of two parents
Egg female gamete
Embryo 1-7 week developing human
Epididymis attached to the testis. Site of sperm maturation
Estrogen Female sex hormone. Develops egg cells and female physical characteristics
Fallopian Tube/ Oviduct tube in which cell travels to the uterus. Fertilization occurs here
Fetoscopy Special endoscope camera is inserted into the uterus for visual examination
Fetus 8-40 week developing human
Follicle Cluster of cells surrounding an egg cell
Gametes sex cells. Carry half of a parent's genetic material
GnRH Hormone that stimulates LH and FSH production
Gonads sites in the human body where gametes and sex hormones are produced
LH and FSH Female sex hormone that signals the ovaries to produce estrogen
Ovaries produce Egg cells
Ovulation Process by which an egg cell is released into the fallopian tube
Placenta organ connecting child to mother. Allows for the transport of food
Progesterone Female sex hormone. Prepares the uterus for embryo attachment
Scrotum external sac in which the testes are stored
Seminiferous tubules tightly coiled tubes within the Testes. Site of sperm production
Sexual Reproduction The creation of an organism using the combination of gametes from two different parents
Sperm male gamete
Teratogen Any chemical that can pass through the placenta and cause damage to the developing fetus/ embryo
Testes produce Sperm cells
Testosterone Male sex hormone. Produces sperm and male physical characteristics
Ultrasound A diagnostic test where sound waves are used to produce an image of a developing fetus
Urethra tube leading sperm or urine outside of the male body
Uterus Cavity where a fertilized egg will implant and develop during pregnancy
Vas Deferens tube connecting the epididymis to the urethra
Zygote fertilized egg results from an egg cell's fusion with a sperm cell
