Rock Cycle
grade 5 study cards for rock cycle test
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Magma | Hot molten rock that is under Earth’s surface, not a rock type |
Sedimentary Rock | Rock that is formed by the breaking down, depositing, compacting and cementing of sediment |
Metamorphic Rock | tTpe of rock is made as a result of being heated and squeezed under extreme pressure |
Igneous Rock | Rock that is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. |
Cooling | Earth process that turns magma into rock |
Erosion | Earth process that slowly removes rock pieces by water, ice, or wind, so they can be made into sedimentary rock |
Heating | Earth process happens deep inside the earth to change sedimentary rock to metamorphic? |
Sand | Type of Earth material is found on the edges of beaches and is made up of quartz |
Boulder | A rock over 25 cm in size |
Soil | Soil is the loose upper layer of the Earth’s surface that allows plants to grow. It consists of decayed plants and animals and broken bits of rocks and minerals. |
Earth Process | Processes that change rocks from one type to another heating, cooling, erosion, weathering, and carrying. |
Earth Materials | The raw materials that are available on Earth. These are non man made things. |
Mineral | Minerals are substances that occur naturally and can be in the form of a single element (like gold or copper) or from a combination of elements. |
Rock Cycle | A long, slow journey of rocks down from Earth’s surface and then back up again. Rocks change types during the rock cycle when they undergo Earth processes like heating, cooling, pressure, and erosion. |
How are First Peoples connected to their environment? | The First Peoples believe that everything in the universe is connected. The spirit world is connected to the mortal world, the land is connected to the sea, and the sky is connected to the ground. |
What natural resources are most important for British Columbia? | Forestry is BC’s most valuable resource but they export energy the most. Fisheries are also very valuable as BC has a large coastal region along the Pacific Ocean. |
What is sustainable development? | It is the responsible development of our societies and cities/countries that keeps the environment healthy for future generations. |
How do the First Peoples view the land differently than non-Aboriginals? | Non-Aboriginals prioritize advancement over keeping the environment healthy. The First People prioritize the environment over material possessions. |
