Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Pluto | largest known dwarf planet, KBO, and TNO |
| Dwarf Planet | round object primarily orbiting the Sun, but has not completely cleared its orbital area |
| Lowell | scientist who thought he saw Martian canals, but more importantly started the search for Pluto |
| Tombaugh | scientist who discovered Pluto, which was classified as a new, ninth planet at the time |
| Charon | largest of Pluto's five moons |
| Orbitally Locked | when an object has a synchronous rotation (tidal locking) |
| Kuiper Belt Object | small, icy body in the Kuiper belt |
| Trans-Neptunian Object | small, icy body orbiting beyond the orbit of Neptune |
| Meteoroid | chunk of interplanetary debris outside of Earth's atmosphere |
| Meteor | small piece of interplanetary debris that heats up as it enters Earth's atmosphere |
| Meteor Trail | quick, bright streak in the sky caused by a meteor passing through Earth's atmosphere |
| Radiant | constellation where a meteor shower appears to come from in the sky |
| Interplanetary Debris | solar system "matter" that is not part of any planet, moon, or star |
| Meteoroid Swarm | pebble-sized fragments from a comet's main body, moving in nearly the same orbit |
| Meteor Shower | when many meteors are seen, caused by Earth's yearly passage through a comet's debris trail |
| Micrometeoroid | small chuck of interplanetary debris ranging in size from a dust particle to a pebble |
| Meteorite | part of a meteoroid that survives entry through the atmosphere & lands on the Earth's surface |
| Crater | bowl-shaped depression on an object's surface from a collision with interplanetary debris |
| Plutino | KBO whose orbital period (like Pluto's) is in a 3:2 resonance with the orbit of Neptune |
