chapter 15 vocab plant responses - test date TBD

TermDefinition
stimuli any changes in an organism's environment that cause a response
tropism plants response of growing toward or away from a stimuli
phototropism growth of a plant towards or away from light
thigmotropism response of a plant to touch
gravitropism the response of a plant to gravity
photoperiodism plants response to the number of hours of darkness in its enviornment
long-day plants plants that flower with less than 10-12 hours of darkness
short-day plants plants that require 12 or more hours of darkness for flowering to begin
day-neutral plants plants that flower when they reach maturity and conditions are right for that plant - and aren't affected by the amount of darkness
auxins plant hormones - generally increases plant growth - often helps the plant grow towards light by increasing growth on the dark side of the stems
ethylene plant hormone - a gas that stimulates the ripening of fruit - rotten fruit emits MORE ethylene
gibberellins & cytokinins plant hormones - increase the rate of cell division increasing plant growth
