sagittal plane divides body into right and left sections
midsagittal plane 2 equal halves of left and right
parasagittal 2 unequal pieces of left and right
frontal/coronal plane divides body into front (anterior) and back (posterior)
transverse/horizontal/cross-sectional plane divides body by top (superior) and bottom (anterior)
oblique plane a combination of the 2 planes (will never be this plane)
body cavities spaces in body that help protect separate and support internal organs
cranial cavity (dorsal) brain and spinal cord
meninges layers of protective tissues that line the cranial cavity and vertebral canal
ventral body cavity front of body, has thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity
thoracic cavity formed by ribs
pericardial cavity fluid filled chamber that surrounds the heart
pleural cavity 2 pleural cavities around the lungs
mediastinum central portion of the thoracic cavity, btw pleural cavity, neck to diaphragm
abdominopelvic cavity diaphragm to groin, divided into abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
serous membrane thin slippery membrane lines body cavities that don't open to the outside, parietal layer lines cavities walls and visceral covers in the cavities
