Week One Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Scientific Investigation To observe or examine something to gather information and data using various research methods
Research the systematic investigation to study materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions
Observation the action or process of observing something or someone carefully in order to gain information
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Hypothesis a proposition made as a basis for reasoning, without any assumption of its truth
Experiment a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact
Independent Variable a variable that represents a quantity that is being manipulated in an experiment
Dependent Variable a variable whose value depends on that of another.
Controlled Variable any variable that's held constant in a research study
Control the power to influence or direct something based on the course of events
Data facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis
Conclusion a judgment or decision reached by reasoning.
Analyze to study something closely, carefully , methodically to learn the behavior of such
Data Trends a pattern found in time series datasets
