What is the difference between a complex carb and a simple carb? Complex carbs give you sustained energy because they take longer for your body to break down. Simple carbs give you fast energy, but also cause you to have an energy crash afterwards.
What is the function of the digestive system? To break down food and transform that food into energy.
What is mechanical digestion? How the body breaks down food using teeth or muscle contractions
What is chemical digestion? How the body uses chemicals like enzymes to break down food within our organs
What is the function of the mouth? Your teeth break down food and your saliva softens food
What is the function of the esophagus? It moves food from your mouth to your stomach
What is the function of the stomach? It breaks down food even more with stomach acid, and moves food to the small intestine
What is the function of the small intestine? Food is broken down even more and nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream
What is the function of the large intestine? It stores waste until it is eliminated :)
When might you need a complex carb and when might you need a simple carb? You might need a complex carb for energy during a long race, a big test, or an endurance activity. You might need a simple carb for quick energy in the middle of a sports tournament.
