Unit 4 Ch 7 & 8
UNIT 4 (Stingray)/Chapter 7 & 8 (Turtle) Science Vocab. Definitions # 1/ Quiz #1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Water Cycle | Water moving between Earth’s surface & the atmosphere. |
| Atmosphere | The mixture of gases that surrounds Earth like a blanket & protects Earth. |
| Wind | Moving air caused by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface; in the U.S. wind generally moves from west to east. |
| Weather map | A map that uses symbols to show weather data. |
| Climate | The average weather over a long period of time- 30 years. |
| Climate Zone | Places that can be grouped into different zones with similar average temperatures & precipitation. |
| Equator | The imaginary line at 0 degrees latitude & runs east to west & that divides the Earth into northern & southern hemispheres (halves); climate is warmest in areas along the equator. |
| Latitude | the measure of how far north or south a place is from the equator; lines of latitude run east to west. |
| Humidity | Water vapor in the air. |
| Air Mass | A large body of air with similar temperature & water vapor throughout. |
| Weather | The temperature & conditions that occur on a daily basis and change quickly. |
| Forecast | A prediction based on weather patterns, sonar, satellite reports. |
| Rain gauge | a tool used to measure how much rain has fallen. |
| Barometer | a tool to measure air pressure. |
| Anemometer | is a tool to measure wind speed. |
| Weather vane | is a tool to measure wind direction. |
| Wind sock | is a way that pilots measure wind direction. |
| Hygrometer | a tool to measure the amount of humidity in the air. |
| Convection current | A current in which gases or liquids rise and sink in a circular pattern. |
| Air pressure | is the weight of air pressing on everything around it. |
| Front | The boundary between two air masses. |
| Precipitation | is any form of water that falls to Earth’s surface- rain, snow, sleet, mist, hail- determined by the temperature in the atmosphere & on the ground. |
| Troposphere | The layer of atmosphere closest to Earth’s surface where weather happens. |
| Stratosphere | The layer of atmosphere where most airplanes fly. |
| Thermometer | A tool used to measure temperature. |
| Evaporation-/ Vaporization | The changing of liquid water to water vapor (a gas) is the process. |
| Condensation | Water vapor (a gas) being cooled and changing into liquid water; water droplets. |
