QuestionAnswer
Water Cycle Water moving between Earth’s surface & the atmosphere.
Atmosphere The mixture of gases that surrounds Earth like a blanket & protects Earth.
Wind Moving air caused by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface; in the U.S. wind generally moves from west to east.
Weather map A map that uses symbols to show weather data.
Climate The average weather over a long period of time- 30 years.
Climate Zone Places that can be grouped into different zones with similar average temperatures & precipitation.
Equator The imaginary line at 0 degrees latitude & runs east to west & that divides the Earth into northern & southern hemispheres (halves); climate is warmest in areas along the equator.
Latitude the measure of how far north or south a place is from the equator; lines of latitude run east to west.
Humidity Water vapor in the air.
Air Mass A large body of air with similar temperature & water vapor throughout.
Weather The temperature & conditions that occur on a daily basis and change quickly.
Forecast A prediction based on weather patterns, sonar, satellite reports.
Rain gauge a tool used to measure how much rain has fallen.
Barometer a tool to measure air pressure.
Anemometer is a tool to measure wind speed.
Weather vane is a tool to measure wind direction.
Wind sock is a way that pilots measure wind direction.
Hygrometer a tool to measure the amount of humidity in the air.
Convection current A current in which gases or liquids rise and sink in a circular pattern.
Air pressure is the weight of air pressing on everything around it.
Front The boundary between two air masses.
Precipitation is any form of water that falls to Earth’s surface- rain, snow, sleet, mist, hail- determined by the temperature in the atmosphere & on the ground.
Troposphere The layer of atmosphere closest to Earth’s surface where weather happens.
Stratosphere The layer of atmosphere where most airplanes fly.
Thermometer A tool used to measure temperature.
Evaporation-/ Vaporization The changing of liquid water to water vapor (a gas) is the process.
Condensation Water vapor (a gas) being cooled and changing into liquid water; water droplets.
