| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion, observable as the movement of an object or subatomic particle. |
| temperature | a measure of average kinetic energy in a substance |
| thermal energy | the total kinetic energy in a substance. |
| thermal expansion | Increase in volume that happens as temperature increases. |
| heat | Energy that is transferred between two substances with different temperatures. The transfer of energy continues until the two substances are the same temperature. |
| specific heat | The energy required to raise the temperature of an object. |
| heat conductors | Substances with a lower specific heat capacity, warm up faster |
| heat insulators | Substances with a higher specific heat capacity warm up slowly |
| radiation | the transfer of heat as electromagnetic waves through fluids |
| electromagnetic radiation | in earth science, energy from the sun that travels in waves |
| convection | the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter |
| convection current | the cycling of matter that results from different temperatures and densities of substances |
| conduction | the transfer of energy from one substance to another through direct contact |
