7th Sci - 3.2 Energy Transfer

TermDefinition
kinetic energy the energy of motion, observable as the movement of an object or subatomic particle.
temperature a measure of average kinetic energy in a substance
thermal energy the total kinetic energy in a substance.
thermal expansion Increase in volume that happens as temperature increases.
heat Energy that is transferred between two substances with different temperatures. The transfer of energy continues until the two substances are the same temperature.
specific heat The energy required to raise the temperature of an object.
heat conductors Substances with a lower specific heat capacity, warm up faster
heat insulators Substances with a higher specific heat capacity warm up slowly
radiation the transfer of heat as electromagnetic waves through fluids
electromagnetic radiation in earth science, energy from the sun that travels in waves
convection the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter
convection current the cycling of matter that results from different temperatures and densities of substances
conduction the transfer of energy from one substance to another through direct contact
