Ecology

TermDefinition
What is Ecology? The study of living organisms and their relationship with their physical environment
What are Ecosystems? A system of relationships between organisms and the way they interact with their surroundings. These interactions may be with biotic or abiotic parts of the environment.
Biotic? Living
Abiotic? Non-living
Organism? is anything that can carry out the processes required for life
MRS GREN? Movement Reproduction Sensitivity (responding to the environment) Growth Respiration (Produce energy) Excretion (breathing) Nutrition (obtaining food/photosynthesising)
Species A group of organisms that share similar characteristics and are able to reproduce resulting in a fertile offspring.
What happens when animals interbreed? While some species may be able to reproduce with another species, the offspring is infertile. E.g. Mule, Zorse.
Environment? The physical, chemical, and biological surroundings of an organism. It involves all the factors (biotic and abiotic) that affect the survival or an organism.
Habitat? The place where an organism lives that provides everything that an organism needs to survive. E.g. water, food, shelter.
Populations? (Be specific) A population consists of all the individual organisms of one particular species living in the same area at the same time.
Community? A community consists of all the different populations of organisms living in the same area at the same time.
