Plants Parts

Structure and Function

QuestionAnswer
Function of roots Absorb water and nutrients, anchor the plant and support the above ground part of the plant, and store food
Taproot large, main root responsible for finding water
apical meristem area at the tip of the root where new cells develop
Rootcap covers and protects the cells at the tip of the root
function of stem support the leaves and position them so they can receive as much light as possible, and move water, minerals, and manufactured food throughout the whole plant
xylem carries water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves
Which direction does the xylem travel? Up! REMEMBER: Xylem Up Water (end of the alphabet) words)
Phloem carries food created from the leaves in photosynthesis to the rest of the plant, including the roots
Which direction does the phloem travel? Down! REMEMBER: PDF! Phloem Down Food!
Cambium tissue responsible for the production of new xylem and phloem, it is between the xylem and phloem
function of the leaves to produce food for the plants through photosynthesis
What are found in the leaves? Chloroplasts!
Where is the cuticle found in the leaves? the top and bottom layer
What is the function of the cuticle? to prevent water from escaping the leaf
Where is the epidermis found in the leaves? layer of cells on the top and bottom of the leaf under the cuticle
What is the function of the epidermis? to protect the leaf
Where is the palisade mesophyll found in the leaves? layer of cells below the upper epidermis
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll? responsible for photosynthesis
Where is the spongy mesophyll found in the leaves? layer of loosely packed cells beneath the palisade mesophyll
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll? responsible for holding the products of photosynthesis
Where are the stomata found in the leaves? in the lower epidermis
What is the function of the stomata? to allow for gas exchange during photosynthesis and cellular respiration and to release water vapor during transpiration
Where are the guard cells found in the leaves? they surround the stomata
What is the function of the guard cells? to open and close the stomata
What is the function of the flower? to reproduce and make more plants, to attract pollinators with bright colors and smells
receptacle where the flower grows from the stem
sepals protect the flower before it blooms, can photosynthesize and create food
Pistil/carpels female reproductive parts of the flower
parts of the pistil stigma, style, and ovary
stamen male reproductive parts of the flower
parts of the stamen anther and filament
anther produces and contains the pollen (sperm) of a flower
filament holds the anther, making pollinators able to access it
stigma receives pollen and transfers the sperm down a tube to the ovary
style assists fertilization, the tube the pollen will travel down before reaching the eggs in the ovary
ovary creates and contains the eggs of the flower, once fertilized will eventually become a fruit
ovules the female eggs of the flower, will be fertilized if it comes into contact with the sperm
petal uses bright colors or smells to attract pollinators to bring male sperm of other flowers
angiosperm type of plant that bears fruits and flowers
gymnosperm type of plant that produces seeds not protected by a fruit or flower
