| IV Terms | IV Term Definition |

| Hematoma | Bleeding into the tissues around an IV site. |
| Circulatory Overload | Too rapid or excessive infusion of fluids which leads to possible pulmonary edema. |
| Flow rate | The rate at which infusates are administered to patients specified in ml/hr |
| Drop Factor | The number of drops per minute needed to equal one ml of solution |
| Infiltration | Inadvertant spreading of IV fluids or meds into the Sub Q tissues surrounding IV site. |
| Air Embolism | Inadvertant admission of air into the vascular system |
| Catheter Embolism | An embolism caused by a portion of the catheter that has broken off into the bloodstream. |
| Phlebitis | Inflammation of the intima of the vein. |
| Septicemia | Occurs when pathogenic bacteria invades the bloodstream. |
| Speed Shock | A systemic reaction to rapid infusion of a medication. |
| Cannula | Small tube or sheath enclosing a trocar. |
| Intravenous | Within or into a vein. |
| Induration | An area of hardened tissue. |
| Venipuncture | Insertion of a sterile needle into a vein. |
| Piggyback Administration Set | A secondary administration set. |
