Anatomy 5

connective tissue

TermDefinition
loose connective tissue loosely woven fibers throughout tissues
What are the 3 types of fibers? elastic, collagen, reticular fibers
adipose tissue large fat droplet (no space), beneath the skin -padding
reticular tissue network of fibers (mainly reticular) -holds organs together
dense connective tissue more fibers but fewer cells
dense regular connective tissue collagen fibers are parallel with fibroblast, no blood vessels -forms tendons
dense irregular connective tissue collagen fibers are irregular (interwoven) with few fibroblasts -white of eye and skin
elastic connective tissue elastin fibers and fibroblasts, stretches and then goes back -lung tissue, arteries, and vocal cords
cartilage dense network of collagen fibers and elastic fibers embedded in chondroitin sulfate, can endure stress
chondrocytes cartilage cells can be found in spaces called lacunae -no blood vessels or nerves
hyaline cartilage white rubbery substance, chondrocytes - provides flexibility and support(the majority of cartilage) - reduces joint friction, also called articular
fibrocartilage toughest type, has chondrocytes -intervertebral discs
elastic cartilage maintains shape after deformations, strong and elastic -ear, nose, vocal chords
chondrocytes no longer divides and produces matrix, mature -lives in the lacunae
chondroblasts undergo division, produce matrix, inmature
interstitial growth cartilage growth from within from chondroblasts -during childhood a nd adolescence
appositional growth growth at outer surface, chondroblasts secrete matrix onto surface (when older)
bone tissue called osseous tissue (2 types: spongy and compact) - stores minerals
spongy bone sponge like with spaces and trabeculae (solid portion) -no osteons (cellular organization)
compact bone solid, basic unit of structure is osteon (harversian system)
periosteum outside of the bone, paired with compact bone
red bone marrow blood cell production
yellow bone marrow fat
lamellae rings of osteon
canaliculi ting black conceals that connect back to the cell to get rid of waste and receive fuel
blood connective tissue made of liquid matrix (plasma), red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood (leukocytes), and cell fragments/platelets (thrombocytes)
lymph connective tissue liquid, more plasma than proteins -supplies fluid, returns things to circulation
membranes pliable tissues that line and cover part of the body (epithelial tissue, except synovial membranes)
mucus membrane lines body cavities that opens to outside - on areolar connective tissue
serous membranes lines body cavities that doesn't open to the outside -on areolar connective tissue
cutaneous membrane covers outside of body
synovial membrane CONNECTIVE lines joint cavities of all freely moveable joints

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
