Diversity of Life #5

TermDefinition
aerobic cellular respiration a process by which organisms convert glucose into usable energy
guard cell a specialized plant cell that controls the opening and closing of the stomata and, as a result, regulates transpiration
organ a structural unit made up of tissues
organ system a group of organs that works together for one purpose
phloem tissue within vascular plants that transport food and nutrients made in the leaves to other parts of the plant
photosynthesis the process by which organisms that have chloroplasts use light energy, carbon dioxide, and water to make glucose
stoma openings on the surface of leaves that allow gas exchange
tissue material composed of similar cells that work together for a purpose
transpiration the process by which water flows through plants, entering the roots and exiting the stomata
vascular system a network of tubes that carry sugars and water to all parts of a plant
Xylem a tissue made of long connected cells that transports water from the roots to all cells in the plant
atom smallest particle of an element
molecule a group of atoms bonded together
eukaryote a cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
prokaryote a cell that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
organism a living thing
chloroplast an organelle found in plant and algae cell where photosynthesis occurs
evidence collected body of data from observations and investigations
autotroph an organism that produces its own food
heterotroph an organism that consumes food
adaptation any structure or behavior of an organism that allows it to survive in its environment
egg female sex cell
sperm male sex cell
germination the growth and development of the seed into a new plant
pollination the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of a plant allowing fertilization of an egg
salinity the amount of salt in a substance
salt tolerant a characteristic of some plants that allows them to germinate and grow in salty environments
seed a young plant in a dormant state
sexual reproduction the creation of offspring when the genetic material from 2 parents is combined
cotyledon the nutrients inside a seed that a plant uses during germination
anther the top of the stamen where pollen is produced
stamen the male part of the flower
