Disease and Biotechnology Vocabulary Terms

| virus | non-living; must reproduce within living cells |
| bacteria | one-celled organisms without a nucleus |
| fungus | spore-producing organism that feeds on organic matter |
| parasite | an organism that lives in or on another organism (host) and harms the host in some way |
| eukaryote | a cell that has a nucleus; more complex |
| prokaryote | a cell that does not have a nucleus; very simple |
| pathogen | a living thing or virus that causes disease; commonly called germs |
| antibiotic | medicines that interfere with the reproduction of bacteria; are not effective against viruses |
| antiviral | drugs that can treat people who have already been infected by a virus |
| microbiology | the study of microscopic living organisms |
| vector | an organism that carries pathogens from one person or animal to another |
| vaccine | can only be used to prevent infections (viral and bacterial) from leading to disease |
| capsid | protein coat surrounding a virus |
| outbreak | A sudden rise in the cases of a disease |
| epidemic | A widespread outbreak of an infectious disease. |
| pandemic | worldwide epidemic |
| antibiotic resistance | the ability of bacteria to withstand the effects of an antibiotic |
| immunity | The body's ability to destroy pathogens before they can cause disease. |
| GMO | Genetically modified organism; made when DNA is removed from one organism and placed within the DNA of what can be a very different organism. |
| cloning | Making a genetically identical copy of DNA or of an organism. |
| ethics | the principles of right and wrong that guide an individual in making decisions |
| genetic modification | modifying (changing) an organism's genes |
| biotechnology | applies scientific knowledge of biology to create products and processes for human use. |
| gene therapy | a technique that places a gene into a cell to correct a hereditary disease or to improve the genome |
| protist | a unicellular eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant, or fungus |
