What is topography? Topography is the shape of the land.
Define elevation. Elevation is the height above sea level.
Define relief. Relief is the difference in elevation from the highest point to the lowest point.
What is a landform region? A landform region is where a large area of land has similar topography.
List 3 types of landforms. Plains Mountains Plateaus
Scientists divide Earth into four spheres. What are they? Lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere.
Define lithosphere. What is it made up of? Earth’s solid, rocky outer layer.
Define atmosphere. What are some of the gasses? The outermost sphere and the sphere with a mixture of gasses that surround the earth.
Define hydrosphere. How much of the earth do oceans cover? The sphere the is formed from the earth’s oceans, lakes, and rivers.
Define biosphere. Where do you live? What sphere? All the living things in/on the earth make up the biosphere. We live in the biosphere.
What’s the difference between a map and a globe? A map is a representation of Earth’s surface on a flat piece of paper and a globe is a representation of the surface on a sphere.
What is a map key? A map key is a section of the map that tells what the symbols on a map mean. This can also be called a legend.
Define equator. Define hemisphere. The equator is an imaginary line that circles the Earth that divides it into northern and southern hemispheres. A hemisphere is one half of the sphere that makes up earth’s surface.
What is the prime meridian? The prime meridian is another imagery line that circles the earth vertically.
If you started at the prime meridian and traveled west along the equator, you would travel through how many degrees on a globe? 360 Degrees
If you started at the equator and traveled to one of the poles, you would travel through how many degrees on a globe? 360 Degrees
What is the difference between latitude and longitude? Longitude is the distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. Latitude is the distance in degrees north or south of the equator.
Where do all longitude lines meet using the map? 90 Degrees The origin or (0,0).
What is a map projection? A map projection is a framework of lines that helps to show landmasses on a flat surface.
What type of map would you use to find the best route up a mountain? Topographic map.
Why would people use topographical maps? Because they are large scale maps. They also have lots of coverage of the land. There are lots of symbols on a topographic map.
What does the USGS stand for? U.S. Geological Survey
