---|---|
What is topography? | Topography is the shape of the land. |
Define elevation. | Elevation is the height above sea level. |
Define relief. | Relief is the difference in elevation from the highest point to the lowest point. |
What is a landform region? | A landform region is where a large area of land has similar topography. |
List 3 types of landforms. | Plains Mountains Plateaus |
Scientists divide Earth into four spheres. What are they? | Lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere. |
Define lithosphere. What is it made up of? | Earth’s solid, rocky outer layer. |
Define atmosphere. What are some of the gasses? | The outermost sphere and the sphere with a mixture of gasses that surround the earth. |
Define hydrosphere. How much of the earth do oceans cover? | The sphere the is formed from the earth’s oceans, lakes, and rivers. |
Define biosphere. Where do you live? What sphere? | All the living things in/on the earth make up the biosphere. We live in the biosphere. |
What’s the difference between a map and a globe? | A map is a representation of Earth’s surface on a flat piece of paper and a globe is a representation of the surface on a sphere. |
What is a map key? | A map key is a section of the map that tells what the symbols on a map mean. This can also be called a legend. |
Define equator. Define hemisphere. | The equator is an imaginary line that circles the Earth that divides it into northern and southern hemispheres. A hemisphere is one half of the sphere that makes up earth’s surface. |
What is the prime meridian? | The prime meridian is another imagery line that circles the earth vertically. |
If you started at the prime meridian and traveled west along the equator, you would travel through how many degrees on a globe? | 360 Degrees |
If you started at the equator and traveled to one of the poles, you would travel through how many degrees on a globe? | 360 Degrees |
What is the difference between latitude and longitude? | Longitude is the distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. Latitude is the distance in degrees north or south of the equator. |
Where do all longitude lines meet using the map? | 90 Degrees The origin or (0,0). |
What is a map projection? | A map projection is a framework of lines that helps to show landmasses on a flat surface. |
What type of map would you use to find the best route up a mountain? | Topographic map. |
Why would people use topographical maps? | Because they are large scale maps. They also have lots of coverage of the land. There are lots of symbols on a topographic map. |
