Earth and Moon

TermDefinition
Earth third planet from the sun *able to support life because of distance from sun
Earth's Axis an imaginary line through the center of the earth *Earth is tilted (tipped) on its axis
Earth's Rotation spinning of the Earth on its axis once every 24 hours that causes DAY/NIGHT, SUNRISE/SUNSET
Earth's Tilt causes a change in the amount of sunlight different parts of the Earth receive. It causes the angle to change from direct to indirect sunlight
Seasons caused by the tilt of earth's axis *The sun's rays strike Earth's surface at different angles at different times of the year. Earth tilted toward the sun-Summer. Earth titled away from the sun- Winter
Sun the star around which the earth orbits every 365 days which is one year on earth
Earth's Moon sphere of rock that revolves around the earth once every 27 and 1/3 Earth days *the appearance of this changes as it revolves around the earth because it receives different amounts of light from the sun (does not make its own light)
Phases of the moon the different ways the moon looks throughout the month
New moon when the side of the moon facing earth is dark
crescent moon when a small part of the moon is lit by the sun
Quarter Moon when the moon has revolved one quarter of its' orbit around the moon and appears to be half lit up
Full Moon when the moon is fully lit by the sun
relationship between sun, earth, and moon the moon orbits the Earth as Earth orbits the sun
Rotate Spinning Motion
Orbit path of an object as it revolves around another object in space
Revolve To move around another object
Equator an imaginary line that circles Earth halfway between the North and South poles *seasonal changes are LEAST noticed here because it receives direct sunlight throughout the Earth's orbit
Direct Sunlight when the sun's rays strike the Earth at steep angles
Indirect Sunlight when the sun's rays strike Earth at low angles
Solar System made up of the sun, planets, moons, and other objects that orbit around it
