Anatomy 3

Chapter 4, part II

TermDefinition
epithelial tissue lines and covers surfaces , packed together (lots of cells)
What are the main functions of epithelial tissue? selective barrier for the movement of materials, release products, provides barrier as protection from environment
apical (free) surface faces the outside
lateral surface touches other cells
basal surface opposite of apical surface, faces the bottom
basement membrane thin double extracellular layer that can be attached to and support the epithelial tissue
glandular epithelium secretory glands (ex: sweat and thyroid)
simple (layer) single layer of cells (secretion and diffusion)
pseudostratified (layer) looks like stratified but only has one layer, nuclei at different layers
stratified (layer) two or more layers, acts as protection and barrier (skin)
squamous (shape) thin cells, like floor tiles (fast transport)
cuboidal (shape) square/cube shape , may have microvilli (secrete and absorb)
columnar (shape) taller than wide, may have microvilli or cilia (secretion, absorption, motion)
transitional (shape) cells change shape, only found in urinary bladder
simple squamous epithelium one layer of thin cells (involved in movement) endothelium- lines blood vessels mesothelium- lines body cavities
simple cuboidal epithelium one layer of cube shaped cells, on connective tissue
non-ciliated simple columnar epithelium one layer of rectangle cells with goblet cells and microvilli
microvilli finger like and sticks up from cells, increases surface area
goblet cells secret mucus
ciliated simple columnar epithelium one layer of rectangle cells with goblet cells and cilia
cilia moves fluids and things in one direction
non-ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium one layer of columned cells with nuclei at varying levels with microvilli, all attach to basement floor
ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium one layer of columned cells with nuclei at varying levels with cilia, all attach to basement floor
stratified squamous epithelium (keratinized or non-keratin) 2+ layers and closest to the apical surface
keratinized skin
nonkeratinized inside the body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
