Unit 7
Earth Layers and Plate Tectonics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Asthenosphere | The Lithosphere "floats" on this semi-solid layer made up of the upper part of the mantle. |
| Convection Currents | Heat from the core and the mantle cause the plates to move. |
| Convergent | A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other. |
| Crust | The thinnest and solid outermost layer of the Earth. |
| Divergent | A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other. |
| Inner core | A dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at the center of the Earth; extreme heat and pressure and temperatures like the surface of the Sun. |
| Lithosphere | The crust and upper part of the mantle and also contains the plates. |
| Outer core | The liquid layer of the Earth's core that surrounds the inner core; made up of liquid iron and nickel. |
| Plasticity | A solid that flows like a liquid. |
| Transform | The plate boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other. |
