Earth Layers and Plate Tectonics

Asthenosphere The Lithosphere "floats" on this semi-solid layer made up of the upper part of the mantle.
Convection Currents Heat from the core and the mantle cause the plates to move.
Convergent A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other.
Crust The thinnest and solid outermost layer of the Earth.
Divergent A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other.
Inner core A dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at the center of the Earth; extreme heat and pressure and temperatures like the surface of the Sun.
Lithosphere The crust and upper part of the mantle and also contains the plates.
Outer core The liquid layer of the Earth's core that surrounds the inner core; made up of liquid iron and nickel.
Plasticity A solid that flows like a liquid.
Transform The plate boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other.
